Three Rangi Ruru Girls Chosen for National Youth Orchestra
Grace McKenzie, Isabella Gregory and Karen Hu
Three of Rangi Ruru’s multi-talented music scholars have won positions in the 2016 NZSO National Youth Orchestra.
For Year 12 violinist Grace McKenzie this is her second year running that she has gained selection, with Year 13 cellist Karen Hu and Year 12 flautist Isabella Gregory gaining selection for the first time.
This is a remarkable achievement for this young group, as a majority of orchestra members are tertiary level/semi-professional players aged 25 years and under.
Grace and Isabella have recently performed with the NZSSSO in Christchurch, where Grace is the Concertmaster and Isabella Principal Flautist. The girls all play a second instrument to a very high level, with Karen enjoying considerable success as a drummer and percussionist, winning many awards and accolades at Jazz Festivals during 2015.
The girls are also working together in a trio participating in the 2016 NZCT Chamber Music contest in June. The NZSO National Youth Orchestra then performs in Wellington on 8 July and Auckland on 9 July.
