Talented Musicians Win Jazz Title
Rangi Ruru’s talented musicians have once again been recognised with a national title, this time in the traditionally male-dominated genre of jazz.
At the New Zealand School of Music Jazz Project in Wellington on 8-10 June, the Rangi Ruru Jazz Combo comprising Xiaoling Liu (Year 12, guitar), Xiling Liu (Year 12, bass), Karen Hu (Year 13, drums) and Iris Lee (Year 11, piano) won the Best Combo Award. In addition, Karen Hu won the award for Best Drummer.
Rangi Ruru’s Director of Music, Janet Kingsbury says this is a fantastic result for these girls and their tutor Dougal Canard.
“They have worked extremely hard towards this and the win is recognition of this. We were really proud to be one of only two South Island school’s represented and for a small school of just 600 students to be taking on some very large North Island schools , it is incredibly rewarding and a testament to the immense talent and hard work of this group of musicians,” said Mrs Kingsbury.
The group will now turn their attention to preparing for the both JazzQuest in Christchurch, and the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival, in Blenheim, both of which take place in mid-August.
