Canterbury Basketball Premiership Win
Rangi Ruru Girls’ School are the new Canterbury Secondary School Basketball Champions winning the Whelan trophy on Wednesday 24 August at Cowles Stadium, against Christchurch Girls’ High School.
Coming up against the undefeated CGHS, Rangi Ruru took out a hard-fought final winning 74-62.
Director of Sport, Jo Fogarty says the final was extremely close towards the end after the narrowing of a near 30-point lead.
Esra McGoldrick (Year 12) was awarded Most Valuable Player and Jo Fogarty said “it was thoroughly deserved with more than 70 points scored by Esra in the past two games. Quite outstanding.”
Esra was well supported by her team mates who really pulled out all the stops to take this final against a tough opposition.
“The Whelan Trophy is named after a former Rangi Ruru basketball coach so this is a particularly special win for Rangi Ruru,” says Jo Fogarty.
