Rangi Ruru’s senior choir, Resolutions received a bronze award at the Big Sing National Finale in Dunedin over the weekend (27/28 August).

The pinnacle of choral singing competitions, Rangi Ruru competed against choirs from across the country and Director of Music, Janet Kingsbury says this is a significant achievement for a group of 24 young singers and their director, Helen Charlton.

“At the end of 2015 over half the choir left school, so this year Resolutions has been very much in a rebuilding phase. To even get to the top 24 was outstanding. We are delighted to receive a bronze award,” she said.

There have been many long hours of preparation and the girls rose to the occasion magnificently and performed from the heart,” said Mrs Kingsbury

Big Sing concludes a busy period for Rangi Ruru’s music department following success for the school’s jazz and chamber music groups earlier in the month.

Rangi Ruru received both a gold and silver medal at the Chamber Music Nationals held in Auckland. Gold award winners ‘Graznya’s Girlz’ (Grace McKenzie, Sarah Lawrence, Victoria Park, Rachel McSweeney) and Silver award winners ‘From Russia With Love’ (Grace McKenzie, Karen Hu, Isabella Gregory). Rangi Ruru was only school represented by two groups.

At the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival both the Rangi Ruru Jazz Band and Jazz Combo received gold awards with the Jazz Combo runner up for the Best Combo. Bass player Xiling Liu and trombone player Rebecca Harris were also selected for the prestigious AllStars band.

“We are extremely proud of the girls’ achievements,” added Janet Kingsbury. “The commitment and hours of hard work really pays off. The girls are a credit to Rangi Ruru. We are incredibly grateful for the support from right across our community and to the dedicated staff who work with and travel with the girls,” she said.
